A guide to the best Christmas light switch-ons in Cornwall

When and where can you see Christmas light switch-ons in Cornwall?

If you’re wondering when and where you can see Christmas light switch-ons in Cornwall this year, the good news is that the festive season starts early across the county. From late November through early December, towns, villages and harbours light up with lantern parades, local choirs, brass bands and that magical moment when the whole community counts down together.

Two of the most stunning celebrations happen right on our doorstep here at Rowes Retreats:

Falmouth’s big switch-on on Thursday 27 November

Penryn’s cosy community switch-on on Saturday 29 November

Both events are full of festive spirit, local pride and the kind of warm atmosphere that makes Cornwall feel like home at this time of year. Below, we’ve gathered a guide to the best Christmas light switch-on events across Cornwall, perfect for planning a festive getaway or adding a little sparkle to your holiday season.

Falmouth’s Big Light Switch-On

Falmouth’s switch-on is one of the most joyful evenings of the year. The celebrations begin with a lively parade weaving through the town, accompanied by local musicians and choirs, before everyone gathers at The Moor for the official countdown and switch-on at 7pm on Thursday 27 November.

Expect festive treats, warm drinks and a brilliant community atmosphere. If you’re staying with us in Falmouth, it’s the perfect early evening outing: think glowing shopfronts, harbour lights twinkling in the distance, and plenty of Christmas cheer.

Penryn’s Community Switch-On

Just a few minutes from Falmouth, Penryn’s switch-on offers a gentler, more intimate festive celebration. Carharrack and St Day Band will be kicking off the evening at 6pm on the chapel steps, followed by a festive parade and the lights being switched on at 6:30pm. After the big switch-on, you can enjoy music from Soul Sensations, bringing the historic streets to life.

This is a lovely way to enjoy a slower-paced celebration, ideal for families, couples or anyone who loves a cosy, small-town Christmas evening. Wander the high street, enjoy the local music and grab a warm drink!

Other Festive Light Switch-Ons Across Cornwall

Cornwall is full of magical switch-ons, each one offering something different, from harbour reflections to lantern trails. Here are a few highlights worth visiting:

• Mousehole, Thursday 11 December. A world-famous display with glowing harbour scenes.

• St Ives, Friday 5 December. Santa traditionally arrives by lifeboat before the lights go on.

• Mevagissey, Friday 29 November. A festive harbour celebration with children’s entertainment and lantern parade.

• Looe, Friday 28 November at 6:20pm. A lantern parade leading to the seafront switch-on.

We recommend checking local town pages closer to the date for any updates.
